THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST ( PIWC MD) SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR January 14, 2007CENTRAL TRUTH: The confidence we have in approaching God is that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.MEMORY VERSE: And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14:13 NKJV
TEXT: Heb 11:6: Matthew 6:9-13; John 14:13-17: Col. 1: 9-10 TOPIC: PRAYER THAT GOD ANSWERS INTRODUCTION: Review of last week lesson. HOW DO WE PRAY? (Matt. 6:9 13) The different elements of Jesus instructed prayer suggest it as a model/ pattern for our prayers rather than a set prayer to be offered up. We have no special form of prayer for general use given us in Scripture. v. 9 Praise and adore the Father v. 10 Ask that God’s will be done v. 11 Ask for what we need v. 12 Confession of our sin v. 13 Ask for God’s help as we are tempted. Prayer may be individual or communal, private or public. It may be offered in words, sigh, and gestures or in silence. Prayer may flow from the subconscious. Prayer expresses itself in many ways: an outpouring of praise Genesis 24:26 : Ex. 4:31 ; 2 Chr. 32:20) :a confession of wrong : a request for help 1 chr: 4:9-10: a declaration of need 1 Samuel 1:12-13: a statement of thanks 1 Tim. 2:1: intercession for others (Num. 6:23;Isa. 62:6; Ps. 122:6; 1 Tim. 2:1; James 5:14)ACCEPTABLE PRAYER must be sincere (read Hebrews 10:22). Prayer must also be offered in the faith that God is, and is the hearer and answerer of prayer, and that he will fulfill his word, “Ask, and ye shall receive” (Matt. 7:7,8; 21:22; Mark 11:24; John 14:13,14), and in the name of Jesus Christ ( 16:23,24; 15:16; Eph. 2:18; 5:20; Col. 3:17; 1 Pet. 2:5).Read Numbers 12:13 PRAYER POSITION OR POSTURE: No rules are anywhere in Scripture laid down for the manner of prayer or the attitude to be assumed by the suppliant. There is mention made of kneeling in prayer (1 Kings 8:54;55 ; 2 Chr. 6:13; Ps. 95:6; Luke 22:41; Acts 7:60; 9:40; Eph. 3:14, etc.); of bowing andfalling prostrate (Gen. 24:26, 52; Ex. 4:31; 12:27; Matt. 26:39; Mark 14:35, etc.); of spreading out the hands (1 Kings 8:22, 38, 54; Ps. 28:2; 63:4; 88:9; 1 Tim. 2:8, etc.); and of standing (1 Sam. 1:26; 1 Kings 8:14, 55; 2 Chr. 20:9; Mark 11:25; Luke 18:11, 13). WHEN AND WHERE SHOULD WE PRAY? Prayer, in the minds of some people, is only for emergencies! Danger threatens, sickness comes, things are lacking, difficulties arise—then they pray. Let us read the following scriptures: Heb 4:16; 1 Tim. 2: 8; 1 Thess. 5 :17; Luke 18 :1 WHY PRAYER FAILS; UN confessed sin. (Psalms 66:18). Not asking according to God’s will. (James 4:3). Asking with faith that doubts. (James 1:6; Heb. 11:6). Improper attitudes toward one’s spouse.(1 Peter 3:7 ). Pride. ( Psalms 138:6 ). Unforgiving Spirit. (Matthew 5:23-24 ;6: 12-15). Idols in one’s life. ACTION STEP Read 2 Thessalonians 1:11Can you summarize in your own words what Paul prayed for the Thessalonians?____________________________________________________________Once again, we see the priority of getting the gospel out to as many as possible!Read 1 Timothy 2:1-4Who did Paul urge us to pray for?_____________________________________________________According to verse 2 why should we pray for those in authority?____________________________________________________ In verses 3 and 4, give two reasons why God wants you to pray:1.___________________________________ 2. ____________God wants us to pray because He wants all men to be saved and for everyone to come to the knowledge of the truth!
